Condition

Asthma is a common lung disease affecting millions of people worldwide. It is caused by narrowing of the airways (tubes) in the lungs. This narrowing is partially or completely reversible. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These symptoms tend to come and go, and are related to the degree of airway narrowing in the lungs. The airways are sensitive to a variety of stimuli, which may include viral illnesses , allergens, exercise, foods, or environmental conditions.
Asthma can usually be treated successfully. This requires being well educated about the disease and being an active player in managing it.

Diagnosing and managing it

We have doctors and nurses who have developed a special interest in diagnosing and treating asthma. We have specialised equipment which will aid the medical staff in diagnosis and treatment of this condition.
Managing your asthma will involve the formulation of an individual care plan with the use of asthma diaries, peak flow metres and ongoing evaluation of medication. You as the patient will be central to this process.
If you have asthma, or indeed any of the symptoms above, contact the surgery to make an appointment to see one of the doctors

DIABETES

Diabetes is a chronic disease which is going to affect more people worldwide by 2025 than presently live in North America. One in three people are not aware they have it. Diagnosis is crucial to reduce risks of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease and to improve life quality and reduce mortality.

Here at Ayrfield Medical Practice we are

  • Targeting 'at risk' people to test and screen for diabetes

  • Monitoring patients already diagnosed- regular 6 monthly check-ups.
