SOUTH EAST STRESS CLINIC
A service of Saint John of God Hospital
Stress is an absolutely necessary emotion in our lives. Our makeup is such that it is difficult to take action unless we feel at least some level of this state. In fact, optimal performance is associated with a moderate level of stress. As long as the stress isn’t prolonged, it is harmless. It is only when stress is prolonged that it causes problems. Prolonged stress results in a range of anxiety and depressive disorders as well as affecting ones physical wellbeing, work and relationships.
Saint John of God Hospital established the Dublin County Stress Clinic in 1996 and pioneered a multifaceted approach to the treatment of stress disorder. It has treated thousands of patients successfully over the years, restoring their wellbeing. This service is now also provided at the South East County Clinic a new outpatient service which is based in the Ayrfield Medical Centre in Kilkenny.
The clinic is led by Dr Richard Blennerhassett, Clinical Director and Consultant Psychiatrist. Referrals can also be made to members of our Clinical Psychology team based in Saint John of God Hospital in Stillorgan.
Treatment is provided for a broad range of stress related disorders:
• Anxiety • Panic Disorders
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Social Anxiety
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • Depression
• Bipolar Disorder
The treatment approach will combine medication, when required, alongside Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT focuses on thoughts and behaviour which underlie and maintain a low and anxious mood. It is a short focused treatment with an excellent track record in helping people recover from stress related conditions.
The costs are as follows:
1 hour Psychiatric Assessment €250
½ hour Psychiatric Review €120
1 hour Psychology session €120
In the case where assessment indicates that a person’s condition requires inpatient treatment, an inpatient admission to Saint John of God Hospital can be arranged.
